PATERSON, N.J. – Hugo John Borst Sr., 98, of Toms River, died Saturday, Oct. 17.
Born in Paterson, Borst lived in New Port Richie, Fla., before moving to Toms River 12 years ago. He served as a corporal in the U.S, Army during World War II for about four years, where he learned the trade of watchmaking.
He started his career as a watchmaker for Arkin’s Jewelers in Paterson, then went on to become a gemologist, and worked at Arkin’s and managed the branch store in Pompton Lakes before moving to Florida. He finished his career as manager for Girard Jewelers in Clearwater, Fla.
He was an active member of the Union Reformed Church and the Palm Grove Reformed Church, where he served as an elder.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; his three sons Hugo John, Jr. of Pompton Lakes; Ronald and Dorothy of Toms River; and Allan and Debra of Toms River; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law of Midland Park; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two daughters-in-law and five siblings.
