Alexander M. Colon, 20, was among two men in face masks who Maywood police said were trying to break into a Maywood home on Wednesday, May 22, around 2:50 a.m., Maywood Police Sgt. William Phayre said.
While the residents were on the phone with the 911 operator, Colon and the other man fled in a white Jaguar. Officer Matthew Della Bella was responding to the call when he saw the white Jaguar heading south on Maywood Avenue near Beech Street.
Della Bella tried to stop the Jaguar which, fled onto Route 17 South at speeds of over 120 miles per hour, Phayre said.
Maywood detectives found that the same two men had tried burglarizing homes in Rochelle Park just before the Maywood attempt, according to Phayre. The pair were believed to be targeting high-end vehicles parked in the residents' driveways and were trying to enter the homes to steal the vehicle’s key FOBs.
Over the next several months, detectives obtained surveillance footage and coordinated with other law enforcement agencies across the state who experienced similar burglaries and motor vehicle thefts/attempts. After developing multiple investigative leads, they were able to identify Colon as a primary suspect, Phayre said.
On Oct. 3, a warrant was issued for Colon’s arrest, charging him with attempted burglary, eluding in a motor vehicle, and possession of burglary tools. Colon was arrested by Newark police that day and turned over to the Maywood Police Department. Colon was taken to the Bergen County Jail where he was lodged pending a court hearing.
