Newark Man Convicted Of Killing Friend After Argument: Prosecutor
A 46-year-old Newark resident was recently convicted of murder in the first degree after shooting his friend in the back in February 2023, authorities said. William Whitfield was arguing with his friend, 45-year-old Keni Johnson inside the Bradley Court Housing Complex, Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. Following the argument, Whitfield went to his apartment, obtained a gun and fatally shot Johnson in the back of the neck, Stephens said. A 23-year-old Hillside man was convicted of first-degree murder on Friday, Nov. 1. for shooting and eventually killing Quamir Nelson in two different drive-by shootings i 2021. A 37-year-old man was convicted on Wednesday, Oct. 2, of fatally shooting a man outside a ShopRite supermarket in East Orange in 2022, authorities said. On June 3, 2022, police in East Orange responded to the ShopRite supermarket on Main Street and found the body of Melja Oliver lying on the side of the building, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. A 31-year-old East Orange woman who was stabbed on July Fourth has died from her injuries, leading to upgraded charges against the accused Newark assailant, police said. At 1:30 a.m., police were called to the 100 block of Park Avenue and found the woman and a child suffering from life-threatening injuries, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. A 23-year-old East Orange man was recently convicted of aggravated assault after violently beating a woman over a remote control in 2023, authorities said. In April 2023, John Davis was staying in a woman's apartment when he assaulted her when she raised an issue over a TV remote control, Essex County Prosecutor Theodore Stephens, II said. The woman suffered a broken eye socket and a brain bleed and was hospitalized for several days, Stephens said.
