Overnight Fire In Fair Lawn Serves As Reminder About Chimney Safety
A pre-dawn chimney fire doused by Fair Lawn's bravest serves as a critical public safety reminder. Fire from a chimney extended into the walls on the first floor of the Saddle River Road home shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, March 26, Fire Chief Jake Mamo said. Mamo, who transmitted a general alarm, said firefighters quickly knocked down the blaze and opened the walls to check for any extension. No injuries were reported. Now that Spring is really here, it's a good time to have your fireplace or furnace chimney checked. Fireplace chimneys should be inspected and cleaned roughly once a year – or about every 80 burns -- says Doug Lee of American Chimney Service. This avoids the build-up of creosote, a byproduct of burning wood that could cause a house fire. Furnace chimneys should definitely be checked annually, Lee says. “Some homes don’t have a fireplace,” he said. “But every home has a chimney to house the furnace flue gasses and vent the toxic gasses out of the home. How Safe Is Your Chimney? NJ House Fire Serves As Critical Reminder
Firefighters quickly doused a smoky chimney blaze in Cresskill Wednesday night. Fortunately, it didn't cause the kind of damage that's possible when homeowners aren't vigilant. The Chestnut Street resident safely fled the two-alarm 11:30 p.m. blaze, Fire Chief Christopher S. Ulshoefer said. No injuries were reported. The fire, which damaged the first and second floors, was declared under control in about 20 minutes, the chief said.
