Jersey Shore Surfer Saves 3 Swimmers In Rip Tide
A teenage surfer is credited with saving the lives of three swimmers stranded by Jersey Shore rip currents. The men were caught in the offshore rip tide Sunday in Bay Head, according to News 12. Kayla Smith, 16, of Point Pleasant dove in with her surfboard to rescue the trio from the ocean -- all in one swift move -- near Howe Street Beach, the television station reported. Gov. Mom Overheard Crash That Killed NJ High School Sweethearts, Lawsuit Alleges
A New Jersey mother was talking to her daughter on the phone when she overheard the tractor-trailer crash that ended her and her boyfriend's lives in Illinois over the summer, a new lawsuit alleges. Point Pleasant high school sweethearts Marsada "Sadi" Connors, 20, and Cole Young, 19 — along with their yellow lab, Maezy — died when a tractor trailer veered into oncoming traffic and hit their 2008 Honda Odyssey on Route 70 in Illinois on Friday, Aug. 20. Shark Pinged 20-Miles Off NJ Coast
A 183-pound white shark who took a trip to the New Jersey coast late last month is back for more summer fun. Martha, a juvenile white shark who measures approximately 7 feet long, was "pinged" just before 8 a.m., Wednesday morning. She was spotted approximately 20 miles off the coast, between Point Pleasant and Neptune, according to shark tracking organization OCEARCH. Sharks will "ping" when their dorsal fin is above the surface long enough to be detected by a satellite. Brick Man Charged With Making Fake Bomb Threats That Evacuated Jenkinson Boardwalk
A 19-year-old Brick resident was charged with calling in the fake bomb threats that evacuated Jenkinson boardwalk earlier this month. Nkosi Jones called the main boardwalk office on June 3 and 4 reporting bomb threats that were later deemed unfounded, Point Pleasant police said. Jones was charged with two counts of false public alarm and two counts of terroristic threats. A Point Pleasant apartment building was damaged in a fire Sunday afternoon. Smoke and flames were coming from a second floor apartment window when crews arrived at the Beacon Gardens Apartments off of Route 35 around 1:40 p.m. Crews from Point Pleasant and Wall worked to knock down the blaze, which was under control in approximately 20 minutes. While no injuries were reported, one dog died in the blaze, according to Jersey Shore Fire Response. A 59-year-old man from Point Pleasant was killed when his motorcycle collided with another vehicle, authorities said Christos Michael, 59, suffered internal injuries and injuries to his lower body after he was thrown from his motorcycle during a crash on Burnt Tavern Road, Brick police said. A teenager from Asbury Park was sentenced to 10 years in state prison for his role in a shooting outside an Ocean County high school, authorities said. Alonzo Legrande, who is now 18, pleaded guilty in September to aggravated assault and weapons charges, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said. Legrande originally was charged as an adult on Sept. 10 with four counts of attempted murder and weapons charges, Billhimer said.
