Neighbors Help Hydrate Firefighters Dousing Garage Blaze In Mahwah
Neighbors brought water bottles and firefighters from Rockland joined their colleagues on the New Jersey side of the border in dousing a garage blaze in Mahwah. The fire broke out on Sherwood Avenue, a mile from the state line, shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 5. Working swiftly in the 90-degree heat, crews needed less than 10 minutes to keep the blaze from doing serious damage to the home just 10 feet away. A tractor-trailer fire temporarily closed northbound Route 17 in Mahwah near the New York State border early Wednesday afternoon. A resident was arrested at the scene of a house fire across the state line that killed a pet cat and severely damaged the home while drawing companies from Mahwah, among several other towns. Ramapo police didn't immediately identify the 51-year-old resident, who neighbors said was taken into custody at the Dunn Road home in Airmont a short time after the fire broke out on Wednesday morning, Sept. 7. Firefighters battled heat exhaustion along with a basement blaze Wednesday night in Mahwah. No serious injuries were reported in the fire, which broke out shortly before 8 p.m. in the two-story home on dead-ended Storrs Court off East Crescent Road near the Rockland County border. Firefighters had the blaze knocked down within a half-hour. The cause wasn't immediately determined. Firefighters doused a mulch blaze that spread to a Mahwah affordable housing development before it could do severe damage. The two-alarm fire broke out at the Ramapo Brae development off Stag Hill Road near Route 287 and the Ramapo RIver around 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 29. UPDATE: A 59-year-old gasoline tanker driver from Paterson was killed in a massive fireball during a crash on Route 287 near the New York State border in Mahwah early Saturday, New Jersey State Police confirmed. A series of explosions were heard after the rig rolled and burst into flames on a notorious stretch of the southbound highway near Route 17 and the New York State Thruway at 6:47 a.m., NJSP Sgt. UPDATE: A construction worker was gravely injured in a pipe-valve explosion Tuesday morning at Ramapo College of New Jersey in Mahwah, responders said. Mahwah firefighters carried the victim out after he was struck in the head and knocked out by a valve cap during a pressure test on an 8-inch water line on the second floor of the college library shortly after 8 a.m., they said. Mahwah firefighters were helping their colleagues from Hillburn, Sloatsburg and Tallan douse a brush fire in a remote wooded area of Rockland on Sunday when a house fire broke out nearby in town. The fire, which originated in the kitchen, was quickly knocked down, although it did cause some damage. Mutual aid was provided by firefighters from Ramsey, Franklin Lakes, Allendale, Saddle River, Upper Saddle River and Suffern. No injuries were reported. Firefighters battled a Monday afternoon blaze fueled by a propane tank in the rear of a Mahwah home at the New York border. The fire was reported around 3:20 p.m. on Doremus Road in Mahwah just off East Crescent Avenue (which becomes Church Road in NY), barely 500 yards from the Airmont line.
