YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y. – Yorktown senior Joe Mastro accomplished something at the 2013 New York State Wrestling Championships that was physically and mentally grueling.

After losing in the first round of the double-elimination tournament, Mastro won five consecutive matches to finish third in the 152-pound weight class. He became Yorktown’s first athlete to place and its highest finisher at states.

Mastro completed his five-year varsity career with a 157-29 record and is The Yorktown Daily Voice February Student-Athlete of the Month.

“Being the first guy to place in the state for Yorktown is an awesome feeling, and it shows how far the this program has come,” said Mastro, who will wrestle in college. “And it was a great way to end my career.”

He needed to win three straight matches to reach the consolation semifinals/placing round. One mistake in those matches could have meant his elimination.

Yorktown coach John Tornambe knew Mastro had the determination to rebound from that first-round loss at the state championships.

“Joe showed a tremendous amount of mental toughness and guts to wrestle back to third,” Tornambe said. “It was his mental toughness that allowed him to do that.”

Even with his third-place finish, Mastro said he hopes that he built a foundation for greater success for the program and that future Yorktown wrestlers place even higher.

Mastro, along with fellow seniors Steven Sabella, Thomas Murray, who placed fourth in the state at 182 pounds, David Varian, Jimmy Kaishian and Kyle Santucci, led Yortkown to a runner-up finish in the Section 1 Division 1 Championships.

“Wrestling for Yorktown has been great because I’ve been able to wrestle alongside my best friends, and throughout our careers we pushed each other to get better,” Mastro said. “Being able to do what we did with this program was great.

“It was a complete culture change at the school from where wrestling was to where it is now. We hope the younger guys will be able to embrace this and keep training hard to keep Yorktown a top-tier program.”
