The eighth grade students in Nicole Riche's Environmental Discoveries class are growing their own vegetables in a garden with the help of the partnership between the middle school and the Tech Center at Putnam/Northern Westchester BOCES in Yorktown Heights. The students recently sat down to enjoy the salad they've helped to create through Riche's program.
“I had kids eating salad who said they never would have if it hadn’t been something they had grown,” Riche said in a press release. “We started the plants from seeds in the Peekskill Middle School greenhouse. They were really excited to see the results of all their work."
The students were able to grow the vegetables on the Peekskill Middle School campus.
“The fact that the school has a greenhouse, which a former PMS science teacher built, is great,” Riche said in the release, noting that the garden area has a water catch basin attached to a gutter as well as three compost bins. “The students love that they are using water from the catch basins, because they know how important it is to the environment.”
