A Mahopac student who has graduated from high school and will soon be heading off to college has been awarded with a scholarship from the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY).

Emma Goodrow accepted the 2019 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship at Mahopac High School’s Senior Awards Night. Donald J. Farrell, the FASNY Sergeant-at-Arms, presented Goodrow with a certificate and $1,500 scholarship for her volunteer service in the community.

“My father is a FASNY member and my family has a long history in the fire service. I am proud to follow in their footsteps and continue the family tradition of volunteerism,” said Goodrow. “The relationships I have formed through the fire department are long-lasting. Many of the people in my firehouse are like family to me. They are all very supportive and helpful in everything that I do.”

Goodrow, who plans to attend Drexel University in the fall to study biomedical engineering, is one of just 26 students chosen for this prestigious scholarship. They are awarded to students based on volunteer and community services like fire departments, scouting, church, school, working with senior citizens, and more. Applicants are also chosen based on demonstration of good character and completion of a written essay.

Outside of school and the firehouse, Goodrow enjoys playing soccer, which she says she will continue to do at Drexel. She also holds a third-degree black belt in taekwondo.

“My advice for anyone considering joining the fire service is that doing so will be the best decision you’ll ever make. Not only will you have a great time and learn a lot, but the relationships you build with other members will last a lifetime,” said Goodrow. “I am very grateful for everything the fire service has taught me.”

FASNY was founded in 1872 and represents the interests of approximately 105,000 volunteer firefighters and medical personnel across the state.
