Pieces Of Yorktown's Knapp House To Be Preserved

YORKTOWN, N.Y. — Developer Neil De Luca has agreed to preserve significant pieces of the historic Knapp House before demolishing the building to make way for Crompond Crossing.

The 26-unit affordable housing building will be constructed along Route 202 across from BJ's Wholesale Club. De Luca and his crew were set to clear the area later this year, but will now "stay the execution" and carefully dismantle the building on either Oct. 30 or Nov. 1.

De Luca and his crew will take apart the building free of charge and allow select community members and Yorktown's Landmark Preservation Commission to claim what they want, said Bill Primavera, a member of  Yorktown's Advisory Board on Architecture & Community Appearance

"All we have to do is take what we want and drive it away," he said. "In other words, it will cost us nothing. All we need is a place for storage."

Primavera is hoping the town will have space to store pieces of the house at 3372 Old Crompond Road. If not, he hopes community members will volunteer and offer garage space.

"We're asking any other Yorktowners ... to come help us carry things away and store them for the day when the town has a repository of some kind for them," Primavera said. "Hopefully we can get the doorway into the Yorktown Museum. For now, all we want is to retrieve the details and that original door and its surrounds."
