This is a second follow up with regards to a June 2 constituent meeting with Senator Terrence Murphy’s staff asking him to co-sponsor the Reproductive Health Act (S2796) and the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act (S3668). Senator Murphy sits on the committees for both of these bills.

On June 9, John Winton, Director of Community Affairs & Special Projects indicated a letter of response would be sent out in about two days.

As of June 20, I was told the letter was to go out “ ‘this week.’ “ My most recent phone communications with the Senator’s office are as follows:

June 23 – I left a message with Alexandra for Mr. Winton. I asked if I may expect a call back today and was told yes. No response.

June 28 – I spoke with the Scheduler, Marykate Acquisto, who said Mr. Winton was working on the letter and that she would check with him. I asked if I may expect a call back today and was told yes. No response.

June 29 – I spoke with Mr. Winton. He doesn’t know the content of the letter that is written and pending approval. I confirmed that, as discussed previously, the letter was to address the Senator’s two main concerns and state his position. Mr. Winton said there was emergency session called which threw a “’monkey wrench’” into everything. I pointed out that the letter was to go out before the emergency session was called so shouldn’t be the cause of the delay. He said the Senator insists on reading every letter and will call me when the letter is in the mail. I asked when that would be and was told there is no “hard answer.”

As a medical professional, how is it that the Senator can take action with regards to people’s health when it comes to the opioid crisis and crude oil accidents, but seems to be incapable of demonstrating the same level of action when it comes to reproductive health? Why isn’t the Senator standing with women?
