Rockland County Executive Edwin Day has taken the bull by the horns when it comes to finally holding deadbeat tax delinquents accountable. In Rockland, if you owe more than two years of back taxes, be prepared to have your property seized.In Yorktown, when it comes to collecting back taxes, we've done things a lot differently and got stuck with the other end of that same proverbial bull.
Unfortunately, Yorktown should be prepared for the same old cast of political characters who will talk a lot, make excuses and do little to fix the tax delinquency problem.
By now, everyone knows that Supervisor Michael Grace and state Sen. Terrence Murphy have more than their fair share of personal tax issues and owe Yorktown a staggering amount of past-due taxes.
If these two elected officials lived in Rockland County, their property would have been seized a long time ago.
So much for leading by example. Yorktown's elected officials have not demonstrated that they have the political will or personal conviction to put taxpayer needs first. These elected officials seem to be satisfied just getting their picture taken cutting ribbons at ceremonial grand openings.
Instead, why doesn't the Yorktown Town Board start cutting through the red tape and come up with a way for this cash-strapped town to finally hold habitual tax delinquents accountable and force them to satisfy their multimillion-dollar tax bill?
Why doesn't Yorktown political leaders follow Rockland County's example?
