Legislator Kaplowitz Outlasts Murphy in District 4

CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. - Westchester County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz (D/Somers) won his eighth two-year term representing District 4 Tuesday night, fending off a tough challenge from Yorktown Councilman Terrence Murphy, according to unofficial results from the Westchester Board of Elections.

With 82 percent of the 56 districts reporting, Kaplowitz, who has served as a legislator for New Castle, Yorktown and Somers since 1998, received 4,933 votes to Murphy's 4,594. Kaplowitz defeated Murphy two years ago as well.

Kaplowitz touted his campaign on the county's negative or zero tax increase in county taxes for the past several years, and pinning Murphy as a councilman on the Yorktown board that has increased taxes.

Murphy, who criticized Kaplowitz throughout his campaign for Westchester County having the highest taxes in the United States for the past four years, refused to concede at his family's restaurant in Yorktown.

"It's still really close, so we're just going to have to wait," he said. "We still have more precincts coming in, and then we have something like 600 absentee ballots left to come. It's still close."
