Shortly before 3 a.m. on Friday, March 8, officers from the Yonkers Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of Bruce Avenue and Radford Street in Yonkers, where there were reports of a man who had been hit by a car.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers found 23-year-old Yonkers resident Jesus Angel Villaneuva, who was down in the roadway with serious injuries. Villaneuva was treated at the scene and transported to a local trauma center for treatment, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation into the crash led to detectives interviewing subjects and witnesses, reviewing surveillance video, and processing forensic evidence. Police said that the investigation determined that Villaneuva was hit by a gray four-door Honda sedan near the intersection. The driver then took off without stopping.

Days after the fatal hit-and-run, Yonkers police detectives announced they arrested Yonkers resident John Martinez, 25, who was located in Connecticut on Saturday, April 6 and his Honda has since been recovered as evidence.

Martinez was charged with a felony count of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident that resulted in death. He was arraigned and has been remanded into the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail.

On Wednesday, Martinez made a brief court appearance, and according to a News 12 report, his attorney stated that Martinez is “very remorseful” and has asked the judge to reduce his $20,000 cash bail. Martinez is due back in court on May 22.
