The creation at Hometown Heroes deli in West Islip is the brainchild of co-owner Diane Mowris, her husband and co-owner Ronnie Mowris told Daily Voice, before turning a phone chat over to Diane.

There is a photo of the chicken cutlet and macaroni and cheese hero on the Instagram page of HomeTown Heroes in West Islip. The image evokes plenty of hashtag OMGs and hundreds of likes.

"It's one of our most popular sandwiches right now," she said.

"We make macaroni and cheese and 'Macaroni Bites' which are little deep-fried macaroni and cheese," Diane said. "They're so good so we added the mac and cheese to a sandwich and called it Mac Attack."

If you want to try it there are three versions.

The "Instagram Mac Attack" is chicken cutlet, macaroni and cheese, and bacon with mozzarella, ranch and hot sauce and the standard "Mac Attack" of the first three ingredients.

And the "Heavy Hitter" is the cutlet with macaroni and cheese topped with gravy.

Ronnie and Diane Mowris bought their deli in November from the previous owner of nine years, Dan Herb.

Unique to the deli is its 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. hours, so it's open for dinner.

And though there is seating, delivery is "one-third of the dinner business," Diane said. "The previous owner started the service and we continued with it."

The full-service deli and caterer has a menu packed with breakfast, lunch and dinner items, from hot and cold appetizers, entrees, sandwiches, wraps, and salads.

A specialty is chicken cutlets, Diane said.

Never reheated or microwaved, the cutlets are "made to order. We bread them the day of. They're big and fresh and delicious. We're really proud of them."

The cutlets come as "Chicken Parm" with mozzarella and marinara sauce, "Chicken Cutlet Supreme" of chicken cutlet, ham, mozzarella, and coleslaw and "Nor'easter" of cutlets with mozzarella, bacon and barbecue sauce, among ways.

HomeTown Heroes is located at 240 Higbie Lane in West Islip.
