YONKERS, N.Y. - The intra-city high football match-up between the Saunders Blue Devils and Yonkers Bulldogs at Gorton High School is the featured game on Saturday's local schedule of 3 p.m. games.
Saunders Trades and Technical High School (3-1) comes off its first loss of the season to a strong Brewster High School team and is primed to make a statement as the city's best football team. Yonkers High School (0-4) has yet to win a game in four starts this fall.
"Yeah, coming off a loss we need a win," Saunders quarterback Kristian Prenga said. "We're determined to win because Yonkers is in our way of making the playoffs."
The Blue Devils offense was shut down in the 21-0 loss to Brewster (4-0) but lead running back Francisco Wilson-King said his team learned from the loss and are poised to make the playoffs by winning the next three games of the regular season.
"Yes, right now it means everything to me to beat Yonkers," said Wilson-King, who leads the Devils with eight rushing touchdowns. "We're trying to get that spot in playoffs and also finish strong."
On the east side of Yonkers, Port Chester High School (2-2) visits Lincoln High School (1-3) with the visiting Rams needing a win to stay in playoff contention and the hometown Lancers looking to get a second victory.
Yonkers-Montessori High School (0-3) will face crosstown rival Palisades Prep (1-3) in another local battle. This will be the best chance Yonkers-Montessori has for a victory in its first season. Palisades Prep is improving and is favored to win.
Fox Lane High School (1-3) will visit Yonkers-Riverside High School at Roosevelt High School in another 3 p.m. start with Riverside (0-4) which has scored just 28 points in four games and is winless. Fox Lane should be able to get its second win against the struggling Rams.
Roosevelt (0-4), the lone Yonkers team playing on the road Saturday, will visit John F. Kennedy Catholic High School (0-4) in Somers in a 3 p.m. kickoff in a meeting of winless teams. This is a chance for Roosevelt to earn its first win.
