Yonkers Weighs Sites For Schools, Awaits Final OK For Rebuild Initiative

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers is lining up spots for two new elementary schools, but whether it gets to build them or not depends on the state, according to a report by lohud.com.

The city is moving to acquire 5 acres of undeveloped land at the site of the former public housing complex known as Mulford Gardens. It currently owns parcels on Ravine Avenue and is talking to a nonprofit organization about buying some of its property there, lohud.com reported

In June, the state Legislature passed a bill creating an authority to handle Yonkers’ proposed $2 billion schools overhaul, which includes the revamping of nearly 40 aging and overcrowded buildings and the creation of two new schools over a 13-year period, the lohud.com report said.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to sign the legislation, but, as of Friday, had not done so, lohud.com's story said.
