More than 200 school district employees face layoffs due to a $48 million budget gap in Yonkers, officials said on Tuesday, April. 9. Another $5 million in cuts are expected to balance the $604 million school budget.
Possible layoffs include 83 teachers, 10 administrators, 116 civil service employees and two union members.

On Friday, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano warned that about 200 city workers -- including police and firefighters -- might be laid off due to a $31 city budget shortfall. Spano blamed much of the revenue gap on reduced aid from New York state.
Spano, a two-term Democrat, plans to release his executive 2018-2019 budget on Friday, April 13. Personnel costs for 1,925 workers comprise about 80 percent of the city's budget.
In addition to layoffs, Yonkers School Superintendent Edwin Quezada proposed the district spend all of its $24 million "rainy day" fund to close the gap.
Other budget cuts are expected to hurt several sports programs. Quezada said the only athletic programs that might be spared are merged high school teams.
