Five Troubled Yonkers Schools Have Improved Their Status

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Five Yonkers schools have migrated out of the worst status as designated by the state Department of Education, according to reporting by the Journal News.

That worst status is "priority," which contains schools that are designated as "failing" and "persistently failing." Intermediately of-concern schools are called "focus" schools, and those of least concern are labeled as being "in good standing."

Those that escaped the dreaded status are Roosevelt High School, Robert C. Dodson School, School 13, Scholastic Academy for Academic Excellence and the Enrico Fermi School of Performing Arts, according to the Journal News. Roosevelt jumped all the way from "persistently failing" to "in good standing."

"I'm ecstatic. I'm very proud of this staff, teachers in particular, the kids, the families. It was a collaborative effort," Roosevelt Principal Ed DeChent said, as was reported in the Journal News. "Although it's a shining moment right now, we have to continue to work hard, continue to excel and continue to figure out strategies for the kids who are not meeting our expectations at this point."
