On Friday, May 14, a fire was first reported in Williamstown near Henderson Road, prompting a response from area departments as it quickly spread from approximately 180 acres of land to upwards 300 acres as of Sunday, May 16.
According to reports, the quickly spreading fire prompted officials to send out warnings to some area residents cautioning that the fire is approaching homes in the vicinity of the blaze.
North Adams fire officials said that as of Sunday night, the fire was making its way toward Massachusetts Avenue.
Crews have been assisted by Massachusetts State Police, which provided a helicopter that has been dropping water from a North Adams reservoir on areas of the fire that were difficult to battle. More than a dozen departments reportedly responded to the scene to assist in curtailing the spread of the fire.
Police noted that as of 8 a.m. on Monday, May 17, Massachusetts Avenue in North Adams was closed to traffic at Ashton Avenue for eastbound traffic and at Protection Avenue for westbound traffic due to the fire.
“The North Adams Fire Department, along with multiple agencies from Massachusetts and Vermont are working to contain the large brush fire that originated in Williamstown,” officials said. “We want to thank everyone for their support in this effort and to let everyone know that no homes and no people are in danger at this time.
"If conditions were to change, the people in that affected area would be properly notified by the authorities and through a Reverse E911 call.”
Officials said that no evacuations are currently being considered. It is unclear what started the fire.
