A woman struck and killed on Interstate 87 in Westchester early Thursday, July 3, was walking in the wrong direction in the southbound lanes, authorities said.
The incident happened around 3:43 a.m. on Thursday, July 3, between Exits 6A and 6 on the southbound side of I-87, according to an update from New York State Police.
Troopers were initially notified at 3:37 a.m. about a person walking against traffic in the southbound lanes. As they responded to find the woman, they received a report that she had been hit by a vehicle.
Troopers and emergency personnel arrived to find the woman lying in the roadway. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigation found that the woman was walking northbound in the southbound left lane when she was struck. Her identity has not yet been released, pending family notification.
No tickets have been issued, and the investigation remains ongoing.
All lanes that had been closed during the response have since reopened.
