Owen J. McClain, 90, Retired Yonkers Police Deputy Chief

YONKERS, N.Y. – Owen J. McClain, retired Yonkers Police Department deputy chief and lifelong Yonkers resident, died Sunday, Jan. 17. He was 90 years old.

He served in World War II with the U.S. Marine Corps veteran and saw action on the islands of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. 

Upon returning from the war, he joined the Yonkers Police Department onSept. 1, 1949, and served for more than 36 years before retiring at the rank of deputy chief in 1985.

He was very active in Sacred Heart Church, the Salvation Army and the Police Athletic League.

He is survived by his children, Eileen (Richard) Kostik, Maureen Haddad and Dr. Vincent (Pamela) McClain; grandchildren Erika, Ashley, Ricky, Jesse and Danielle; great-grandson Jack; and sisters-in-law Helen and Ethel McClain.

His wife, Eleanor (Hagan) McClain, died in 1989.

He also was predeceased by his siblings, Walter, Harold, Edward, Vincent, Richard, Rita, Helen and Alice; and a son-in-law Mark Haddad . 

Visitation will be Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. at Flynn Memorial Home, 1652 Central Park Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Monastery Church, Yonkers. Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in New Rochelle.
