YONKERS, N.Y. -- Mayor Mike Spano and Council President Chuck Lesnick recently announced that the City of Yonkers has partnered with Granicus for a new "Open Yonkers" initiative.

The City of Yonkers and Granicus will implement the new ‘Open Yonkers’ initiative to establish a "legislative tracking portal and web-based community engagement forum that provides residents with easy access to participate in city projects and contribute ideas for community improvement," representatives said. Granicus is a government transparency and citizen collaboration provider.

“This initiative builds on our efforts to provide a government that is open, transparent, accessible and engages the residents of Yonkers in participating and taking pride in our city,” said Spano in a release.

Council President Chuck Lesnick said he had  long sought for the implementation of the new system, according to the release.

“Besides the public benefit of being able to readily access the policy-making process, the technology will help Yonkers become more cost-efficient and eco-friendly," said Lesnick in the release. "Governments using these solutions are saving between $20,000-$300,000 per year in paper reductions and time-savings.”

The forum is set to allow the city to “crowdsource” ideas and gather feedback from the community on particular topics, representatives said. The public will be able to submit ideas, vote on ideas, participate in discussion forums and surveys, as well as, track the results of their participation through a convenient online forum.

“Yonkers is on its way to revolutionizing their open government and civic engagement process by providing their community with a more conveniently accessible way to access policy-making, provide their feedback, and influence decisions that are being made in government,” said Tom Spengler, CEO and Co-Founder of Granicus, in the release. “It is this kind of interactivity that makes Yonkers a leader in the Gov 2.0 movement."
