YONKERS, N.Y. – Mourners filled the Church of St. Eugene for the funeral service of Carol Martinelli, wife of a former Yonkers mayor, on Saturday.

Martinelli died on Wednesday, Nov. 19. She was 89.

Martinelli was born on Feb. 8, 1925, to Ricardo and Rose Madatto in Mongrassano, Italy. She moved with her family to Mount Vernon at the age of 4.

In 1949, she married Angelo Martinelli, who became the mayor of Yonkers in 1974. His tenure lasted 12 years.

Martinelli is remembered for her giving spirit. She chaired the American Cancer Society's Daffodil Days, which raised money for cancer research.

While living in Mount Vernon, she volunteered at Mt. Vernon Hospital and organized home cooked meals through St. Eugene's program, providing a monthly meal for the homeless of the Yonkers Sharing Community. She was also a member of the St. Joseph's Medical Center Auxiliary and the Ladies Guild of her parish, St. Eugene's.

She also served on the Advisory Board of the Westchester Division of the Committee on Italian Migration and on the Board of Directors of the YWCA.

She is survived by her husband and their six sons, including former City Council President Richard Martinelli, City Court Judge Michael Martinelli and publisher of Westchester Magazine Ralph Martinelli.
