A 26-year-old man is in police custody after being accused of abandoning his dog and failing to provide it with food, water, or veterinary care, the SPCA of Westchester announced.

Eric Anderson of Yonkers was arrested this week and charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly abandoned his pit bull - now named Stone - and failing to provide for him, the SPCA's Humane Law Enforcement Unit announced on Wednesday, June 12.

According to the SPCA of Westchester, on May 22, a passerby found an emaciated dog inside a Yonkers apartment building on Hamilton Avenue. The SPCA was alerted and found the young pit bull “in an advanced state of emaciation, dehydration, and extreme neglect.”

The dog was rushed to an area veterinarian for medical attention and brought to the SPCA’s Simpson’s Clinic the following day for additional treatment and care.

An examination by the SPCA’s veterinary staff determined that Stone’s state of emaciation was consistent with starvation, with his skull, ribs, hip, and pelvic bones were visibly prominent. The SPCA said Stone was "denied necessary food and water resulting in the loss of nearly 50 percent of his body weight. If he had been left in that state, his condition would have worsened and most likely been fatal."

“It’s hard to understand how anyone could do something so cruel to an innocent animal,” SPCA Executive Director Shannon Laukhuf said. “It’s remarkable how trusting and resilient Stone is after all he’s endured. Thanks to the SPCA’s life-saving efforts, Stone is in good hands and has a bright future ahead.”
