While the Empire State is home to some of the most affluent and desirable places to live in the country, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

24/7 Wall St. created a weighted index of 25 measures that include four categories - affordability, economy, quality of life, and community - to determine which cities were the worst to live in every state.

The complete methodology can be found here .

The City of Newburgh in Orange County was designated as the “worst city to live” In New York in the newly released report.

The report found that Newburgh, with a population of 28,444, with a median home value of $170,900, less than the state’s median value of $293,000. Its poverty rate of 31.2 percent is double the state’s average and there have been 1,236 violent crimes per 100,000 people, a sizable increase from the state average of 357.

According to the report, Newburgh ranks as the worst city to live in New York State, largely because of its high violent crime rate and widespread financial hardship. It noted that “like many cities on the list, Newburgh is shrinking,” with the population decreasing by 1.5 percent over the past five years.
