The former legislative staffer, identified as Anand Singh, was fired on Thursday, April 13 after a video surfaced of him allegedly driving hours to try and meet up with a 14-year-old girl, according to the Westchester County Board of Legislators.
The incident is now under investigation by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force, Board of Legislators Chair Catherine Borgia said in a statement on Tuesday, April 18.
Since Singh was fired, Board members have begun calling for Borgia to resign for her handling of the incident, including member James Nolan, who represents Legislative District 15 which includes Yonkers and Bronxville.
In a statement on Thursday, April 20, Nolan called Borgia's response to the incident a "mishandling."
"The multiple reports surfacing concerning sexual misconduct surrounding a former legislative staffer are horrific and could potentially demonstrate that some elected legislators put protecting their own employees above protecting the public," Nolan continued.
However, Borgia said that the calls for her resignation are a "political witch hunt."
"Instead of the facts of the situation, some of my colleagues have been distracted by politics and personal advancement," Borgia said in a statement on Tuesday, April 25, adding, "We all agree that the staffer who was fired displayed conduct that was deeply disturbing, that is clear. We have the opportunity to use this situation to make our institution stronger and more resilient, instead it is being weaponized for personal benefit."
Borgia, who represents Legislative District 9 which includes Ossining, Briarcliff, Croton, parts of Cortlandt, and Peekskill, also added that she has "followed the law."
"I have followed the ethics laws and rules that govern this body," she said, continuing, "I will not resign."
Borgia was elected Chair with a unanimous vote at the beginning of the 2022-2023 term.
The investigation into Singh's alleged misconduct is still ongoing.
