WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. -- The New York State Department of Education released statewide standardized testing results for grades three to eight in math and English language arts Wednesday, including Westchester County.
The scores, the first since the new Common Core Learning Standards were adopted by the State Board of Regents in 2010, were significantly lower than past years.
According to State Education Commissioner, John B. King Jr., this change in scores – which will effectively create a new baseline of student learning – is largely the result of the shift in the assessments to measure the Common Core Standards, which more accurately reflect students' progress toward college and career readiness.
The results showed that 31.1 percent of grade three to eight students across the state met or exceeded the ELA proficiency standard; 31 percent met or exceeded the math proficiency standard.
The statement acknowledged the persistence of the achievement-gap, with only 16.1 percent of African-American students and 17.7 percent of Hispanic students meeting or exceeding the proficiency standard.
The White Plains School District declined to comment until more thoroughly reviewing the test results.
