Popular online hotel booking sites like Hotels.com and Expedia acquired blocks of rooms at a low price and sold them on their sites at a much higher rate, but paid taxes on the lower rate, according to lohud.com.

The county has hired a New York City law firm to look into litigation to recoup any possible losses. The county has no idea of how much money could potentially be involved, lohud.com said.
