This comes amid worldwide concerns of an attack while the New Year's Eve celebrations are underway.
New York City is a popular place Dec. 31 where around a million people assemble on Times Square for the annual countdown to 12 a.m. and ball drop.
The mayor said a large amount of police will be out Thursday, including a new anti-terror force called the Critical Response Command, over 500 officers that specialize in preventing terror, according to yahoo.com.
In all there will be around 6,000 police officers on hand, New York City's police chief Bill Bratton said to reporters, some in plain clothes, yahoo.com reports.
