According to a New York Post report, Rivera is in opposition of proposed construction at FASNY which would include the consolidation of its many Westchester locations into one site at the former Ridgeway Country Club, which is next to a multi-million dollar home the future Hall of Famer purchased.
FASNY has proposed a $60 million plan that still requires approval from White Plains officials, a vote which Mayor Tom Roach has delayed until after the mayoral primary later this month.
The report states that Rivera has called the project “unworkable and unsafe” in a letter delivered to Roach, citing street traffic and safety concerns in the area.
A spokesman fo FASNY said that Rivera was “late to the game,” as the project has been in the works for the better part of a decade before the Yankee great bought the property and began to build the mansion.
“We’re a little perplexed as to why he is suddenly discovering he is concerned about the street being busy and safety, why would you buy that lot if you’re worried about the school before spending however many millions to develop the home on a street you feel is dangerous,” the spokesman noted. “The school and city have been conducting reviews of the school’s plans for more than seven years.”
Officials noted that the building project has been fully vetted, and the courts have ruled in favor of FASNY multiple times, and it went through “the most intensive environmental review ever done with any project in the city of White Plains.”
A vote on the project is expected later this month.
“FASNY has made many concessions to make things as compatible as possible in the area and to address any community concerns that have been raised over the years,” the spokesman added. “The school has compromised in a very serious way in reducing the number of students, reducing developments at the school and doing everything the city has asked.
“So hopefully the final decision will be coming soon and we can move forward.”
