WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- There is a greater than 90 percent chance that a strong El Niño will take hold of the Northern Hemisphere in the late fall and winter, according to a new forecast released Thursday by the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

Further, the NOAA reports an 85 percent chance it will last into early spring.

Some forecasters have said the El Niño could produce the worst storms parts of the West Coast have seen in decades. For this area, the  El Niño would lead to above-average temperatures and fewer winter storms than is normal.

As reported on Daily Voice earlier this month, the conditions in the Pacific Ocean signal a strong El Niño. Forecaster consensus, according to, unanimously favors a strong one, with its peak in the coming late fall and early winter. It could be the strongest since the 1997-1998 pattern.

El Niño is a series of climate changes that develops from a warm band of water near northern Peru and Ecuador in the Pacific Ocean. Its resulting patterns include heavy rainfall throughout winter.
