April Fool's Day has been celebrated around the world for centuries, marked by individual pranks, business hoaxes and other types of hijinks, depending on what part of the globe you inhabit.

In Italy, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, a traditional prank is trying to stick a paper fish without getting caught.

Wikipedia recounts that "in Ireland it was traditional to entrust the victim with an 'important letter' to be given to a named person. That person would then ask the victim to take it to someone else, and so on. The letter, when finally opened, contained the words 'send the fool further.'"

Scotland has a similar tradition, and a fool there is known as a "gowk" – Scots for a foolish person.

In Poland, people throw flour at each other, the Telegraph noted.
