Flooding Leads To Parkway Closures In Westchester

Thanks to a strong storm system that has already left thousands without power, a long stretch of a busy parkway in Westchester has been closed by flooding while stretches of other roadways are also closed.

Both the southbound and northbound lanes of the Bronx River Parkway are currently closed from the Main Street crossing in White Plains to the split with the Sprain Brook Parkway in Yonkers, Westchester County Police announced on Monday morning, Dec. 18.

The closure comes amid a potent weather system that has delivered downpours and gusty winds. The storm has caused thousands of power outages in Westchester alone.

The Taconic State Parkway is closed in Mount Pleasant on the northbound side between Stevens Avenue and the Sprain Brook Parkway.

A stretch of the Saw Mill Parkway northbound is closed in Pleasantville near Manville Road.

Also in that vicinity, traffic is slow on the Sprain Brook Parkway due to flooding.

In response to the flooding threat posed by the storm, Westchester County Police advised residents to avoid driving through standing water, as it can be deeper than it first appears.

"Turn around, don’t drown. Just two feet of moving floodwaters can cause a car to float away," the department said, adding that residents should not walk through fast-moving water either.

Those whose vehicles become stranded in floodwaters should stay inside and call 911. If water begins rising, motorists should try to climb out of their vehicle's window and wait for rescuers on the roof.
