Helicopter Pilot Makes Emergency Landing Off Long Island Coast

The incident took place around 4:15 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 21, near Wantagh when the 64-year-old pilot had to ditch the aircraft due to weather conditions at North Meadow Island in the area of the Loop Parkway, said the Nassau County Police.

Nassau County Police Marine 4 was able to locate the victim and with the assistance of the Merrick Fire Department and transported the pilot to the Jones Beach Coast Guard station, police said.

The pilot was then transported by a Nassau County Police Ambulance to an area hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, including a facial laceration, back, and rib pain.

Along with the Aviation Unit, the Town of Hempstead Bay Constables were involved in assisting in the rescue operation.

FAA officials will continue the investigation.
