38-Year-Old Charged In Death Of Long Island Man Following Altercation

Police have charged a man following the investigation of the death of a man after an altercation on Long Island earlier this month.

The man died on Sunday, Jan. 5 after reporting he was in an altercation in the Riverhead on Thursday, Jan. 2.

Wayne Sapiane reported to police that he was struck on the head by a man Suffolk County Police now identify as 38-year-old Daniel Hughes in the area of West Main Street in Riverhead. Southampton Town and Riverhead Town police both responded to the incident.

Sapiane, 65, who was undomiciled but living in Riverside, was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, and later to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he died.

On Tuesday, Jan. 14, Suffolk County Police charged Hughes, who is undomiciled, with second-degree assault. He will be held overnight at the 7th Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at Riverhead Town Court on Wednesday, Jan. 15.
