Scam Alert Issued To Residents By Ulster County Sheriff

Area residents are being victimized by a scam in which a caller, claiming to be or to represent a relative, asks for money to be wired to them to avoid legal trouble, according to the Ulster County Sheriff's Department.

An alert has been issued by the Ulster County Sheriff's Department for a scam that involves suspects posing as family members needing money for legal fees.

Other times, the department warned, scammers will ask potential victims to obtain currency cards, like Green Dot cards. 

In at least one case, an individual posing as a defense lawyer or prosecutor met with a victim to obtain the bogus payment. 

"Always confirm the information and when possible, the identity of any person calling you on behalf of someone else or representing themselves as a law enforcement official," warned the department.
