Woodlands Students, Teachers Raise Money To Fight Breast Cancer

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The last uphill stretch in a recent 5-mile walk against breast cancer was the toughest, but a group of Greenburgh kids tackled it gladly, knowing that their efforts would help those facing a much harder fight.

Woodlands High School students, teachers and staff members helped raise money for research and education by walking in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on Sunday.

According to teacher Victoria Stellato, a contingent of 40 students from Woodlands High School and Middle School and 20 educators and staff members from all over the district took part in the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk in Purchase on Sunday.

The group walked under the banner of the Greenburgh Teachers Federation and Greenburgh school district, Stellato said.

"We walk and wear pink show our support to those who are still fighting, for those who have lost their lives, and to spread the hope that one day we can eradicate cancer," Stellato said.

They have also been selling pink T-shirts and carnations to raise funds with the aim of increasing awareness about the disease that strikes thousands of women in the U.S. every year.

So far, they have raised about $1,990 of their $3,000 goal, Stellato said. Members of the high school’s Key Club also walked and helped out.

On Friday, Think Pink Day, everyone in the school district is being encouraged to wear pink to show support for the cause. Students will also hold a fundraising raffle and give away prizes, Stellato said.

According to the American Cancer Society, the 474 teams and 3,327 individuals participating in the Westchester walk raised a total of $752,915.87.
