SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- Leana Peltier, an AP biology teacher at Sleepy Hollow High School, has participated for the past two years in the Mercy College Wipro Science Education Fellowship program.

The fellowship program is designed to develop teacher leaders by encouraging collaboration among teachers from a variety of grade levels and school districts. As part of her research, Peltier chose to address the issue of designing inquiry based lessons for elementary school science classes. Peltier met with a team of three elementary teachers bi-weekly for five months.

At each meeting Peltier taught a specific skill and the remainder of the time was dedicated to each teacher developing specific lessons targeting the skill. Peltier measured the growth of her fellow colleagues and presented it at the National Science Teacher’s Convention in Nashville on April 1.

With Peltier’s support, the teachers’ confidence grew in using inquiry style learning, their lessons became more students centered and they felt students had a deeper understanding of what it means to think like a scientist. Peltier will continue to collaborate with teachers in the Tarrytowns Union Free School District, and strives to promote a collaborative environment amongst teachers.
