The bond’s approval would make way for changes to the high school’s athletic facilities that have been recommended in three previous sets of building plans, but deferred over the last decade. Plans include reconfiguring the school’s physical education instructional spaces to meet an updated PE curriculum that is aligned to state requirements and renovating the locker rooms.
“Over the years, we’ve updated our science and music wings, as well as all of the other instructional areas at the high school,” Board of Education Trustee Nancy Pierson said. “But we haven’t done anything to improve the delivery of our PE curriculum. It’s time.”
The school’s facilities have deficiencies across the board in ventilation, running water, plumbing and electrical work. Additionally, gym lockers are rusted and too small for the backpacks of the more than 1,500 students enrolled in physical education classes at the high school.
“The locker rooms are the same as when I went to school here in the late 50s,” said Board of Education Trustee Rusty Martin. “They haven’t changed one bit.”
The changes also would enable the high school to serve as a designated community evacuation site in the event of an emergency.
Payments on the bond, which would begin in the 2017-2018 school year, would not result in a tax rate increase due to other bonds being paid down.
A public vote is set for Tuesday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Mamaroneck’s elementary schools.
