Washington, in accepting the position, noted that she never expected to become a principal. "I loved teaching, but then I realized that if I loved teaching, I would love being a principal who works with teachers," she said.
Washington began her teaching career as a middle school English teacher in the Bronx in the 1990s and joined Woodlands High School as a teacher in 2007. She became an assistant principal at Woodlands in 2012 and last year was named interim principal at Bailey.
