Education Fund Awards Eight Innovation Grants To Irvington Schools

IRVINGTON, N.Y. – The Irvington Education Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that funds education enrichment programs for the Irvington Union Free School District, has awarded eight Innovation Fund grants to the district.

The grant awards total $11,928, which will go toward a variety of educational opportunities for the students. Superintendent of Schools Kristopher Harrison commended the IEF for its approval of grants to provide students with expanded learning opportunities and praised the students who applied for the grants.

“We continue to be impressed by our students' innovation and their desire to have a positive impact on the community and to follow their passions,” said Harrison

These are the grants:

  • Student Art Initiative Murals Grant – Collaboration of Art Club members to create murals representing literary imagery and quotes; submitted by Sydney Cuff, Julia Herceg, Rebecca Mesonjnik and Sophia Vatakis. Grant award: $900.
  • Festival of One-Act Plays – The Theater Troupe will hold a festival of one-act plays representing both published and student-written plays; submitted by Clara Montgomery and the Theater Troupe. Grant award: $4,200.
  • Sandy Hook Promise – Provide timely education and awareness for students to prevent gun violence in school and our community; submitted by Daniel DeMatteo. Grant award: $1,000.
  • Environmental Education and Clean-Up – Educate students and the community on the importance of preserving local nature and promote this idea through specific clean-up days at Halsey Pond; submitted by Julia Sabatino. Grant award: $626.
  • Geotagging Environmental Project – Set up a Quick Response smart tag system at a local one-mile hiking tree trail so that hikers can access tree information on their smartphone or tablet; submitted by Sydney Cuff. Grant award: $1,162.
  • Environmental Club Marker Recycling – Collection program for recycling used Crayola markers; submitted by Cleo Davidowitz and the Environmental Club. Grant award: $741.
  • Youth Gender Equality Conference – Create a larger community for gender equality groups and clubs in area high schools; submitted by Zachary Gallin. Grant award: $1,500.
  • Robotics Club – Provide robotics program that educates, offers support and supplies tools and materials; submitted by Mikhail Dorokhov and Justin Tunis. Grant award: $1,799.
