TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- A 43-year-old man from Sleepy Hollow drowned in the Hudson River at Pierson Park located at the end of West Main Street Friday.
According to police, the victim, whose name is being withheld pending notification of family entered the water and proceeded to swim away from the shore. After going about 50 feet, he turned and started to come back when he became submerged in the water, police said.
When he resurfaced, he was unconscious and was taken to the shoreline by another man. Police received a 911 call about the incident at 1:29 p.m. The fire department and Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance also responded.
Police provided medical assistance but the victim was unconscious and not breathing. He was taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:29 p.m., police said.
Police said the death appears to be accidental and the case was referred to the Westchester County Medical Examiner.
