Frances Kofka, 93, Sleepy Hollow Resident

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. – Frances H. Kofka, of Sleepy Hollow, died Sept. 8. She was 93. 

Born Sept. 20, 1918, in North Tarrytown, (what is now Sleepy Hollow) she was a daughter of John and Anna Kolesik Manca. Kofka graduated from North Tarrytown High School and married Frank Kofka at Holy Cross Church on July 4, 1942. 

Kofka worked at Eastern Aircraft during World War II. She later worked for Reader's Digest until becoming a full-time homemaker. She was a member of the Sleepy Hollow Seniors and a longtime parishioner of Holy Cross Church, where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. 

She most enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a marvelous cook and baker, her family said, specializing in Slovak cakes and pastries. 

Kofka is survived by two daughters, Joan Kofka, of Sleepy Hollow, and Jean (Eddie) Harrison, of Edwards, Colo.; a son-in-law, Richard Spota, of Sleepy Hollow; two sisters, Helen Manca, of Sleepy Hollow, and Catherine Carpenter, of Shrub Oak; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Her husband died  in 1982, and a daughter, Patricia Spota, died in 2011. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Mary Kiselak and Anna Thompson; and two brothers, Stephen Manca and John Manca. 

Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, at Coffey Funeral Home in Tarrytown. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at St. Teresa of Avila Church in Sleepy Hollow. Burial will follow at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
