UPDATED 10:35 IRVINGTON, N.Y. – The Irvington Public Library is closed until further notice because of water damage, village officials announced Thursday morning.
A fire broke out in an apartment in the Burnham Building, which houses the library on the ground floor, and caused the sprinkler system to activate on Wednesday. No injuries were reported from the fire.
"The library is in the process of being repaired and will temporarily not be open to the public," library officials said in a statement.
Library Director Pamela Strachan said that there's "substantial water damage."
Clean-up is under way and "We are anxious to reopen as soon as possible," Strachan said.
Library officials ask residents to use other Westchester libraries to borrow, return and reserve items it is closed. The library's website and online services have not been affected.
