Sinkhole From Storm Shuts Down Busy Westchester Street

A week's worth of wild weather led to the development of a sinkhole that forced the closure of a busy Westchester roadway.

Orchard Place had to be shut down between Orchard Street and Nepperhan Avenue in Yonkers on Friday, July 19, after a sinkhole that opened up earlier this week spread, leaving the roadway with a large crater.

When the sinkhole was initially discovered, DPW crews put temporary metal sheets over the hole, though the recent unpredictable weather led to a larger cave-in on the street.

Police said that Orchard Place will remain closed indefinitely as DPW crews look to patch it up and come up with a permanent fix.
