TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Construction on the new Tappan Zee Bridge began in July and topped the news for 2013.

The New York State Thruway Authority announced on Jan. 2 that construction of the new Tappan Zee Bridge would begin in early 2013. The new bridge, costing $3.1 billion, will take about five years to complete.

Construction began with pile driving in July.

The new bridge will include two spans with eight lanes of traffic, breakdown shoulders and emergency lanes. The north span will include a pedestrian and bicycle lane. Officials say the new bridge will also have suicide prevention measures, such as anti-climb fencing and security cameras.

In other top stories, one woman was killed and four other people were injured in a wrong-way crash that caused a multi-vehicle pileup and delayed traffic for hours on the northbound Tappan Zee Bridge on July 24.

According to New York State Police, Hannah Ayeh-Brachie, 56, from Hillcrest, N.Y., was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Rockland County Medical Examiner. The four injured people were taken to area hospitals in serious and critical conditions.

Fox Television's new TV show based on “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” began airing in September bringing a nationwide spotlight on the historical village.

Ichabod Crane, in this new show, is a Revolutionary War captain who travels forward in time and must solve a police officer's murder when the Headless Horseman returns to haunt the town.

The body of Megan Bookstaver, 23, of Hicksville, Long Island was found after a 911 call to Tarrytown Police on Sept. 2.  Police said Bookstaver was in a fourth-floor room of the residence with two other people looking at several firearms when one of them fired, striking her in the head.

Tarrytown police said they received a call from Hudson Harbor, 157 Main Street, reporting someone had been shot in a four-story town home.

Chef Carl Van Dekker, from The Village Dog in Tarrytown, defeated Chef Eric Korn, from Good-Life Gourmet in Irvington, in the final round of the Golden Knives Challenge in May.

Van Dekker, a Hastings resident, celebrated his win by pouring champagne into his trophy and drinking it with Korn.
