TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Tarrytown native Marine Cpl. Juan C. Mejia shared his story of how he joined the Marine Corps in a recent article on the Defense Video and Imagery Distribution System website.
Mejia, who has served three tours in Afghanistan in four years, came to the United States with his family at age four from Ecuador. He went to high school in Tarrytown and became a U.S. citizen at age 16, according to the article.
In the Marines, he was a water support technician with Combat Logistics Regiment 2, Regional Command (Southwest).
Mejia served in the Helmland Province as well as at Camp Dwyer, both in Afghanistan. Before deploying to Afghanistan, he helped with humanitarian efforts in Haiti after that country's devastating earthquake in 2010.
He also reminisced about Tarrytown, calling it a "nice, quiet town."
