Massive Oil Spill Contaminates Saw Mill River In Westchester

An environmental hazard unfolded in Westchester County when a ruptured fuel line from a generator dumped nearly 1,200 gallons of home heating oil into a drainage system, sending the pollutant flowing into the Saw Mill River.

The spill happened at the Saw Mill River in Hawthorne in the area of Saw Mill River Road (Route 9A) and Skyline Drive.

The Hawthorne Fire Department responded to the spill around 9 a.m. on Monday, March 17, after reports of a large diesel spill near Skyline Drive and Saw Mill River Road, the department said. When crews arrived, they discovered a substantial amount of home heating oil pouring from a drainage pipe into the river.

Firefighters traced the source of the spill by inspecting multiple catch basins along Saw Mill River Road and Skyline Drive. They found that a large generator had suffered a catastrophic fuel line rupture, sending the oil soaking into the ground and into the drainage system.

To contain the spill, firefighters deployed multiple absorbent pads at key locations along the river with assistance from the Westchester County Hazmat team. Crews worked for three hours before the scene was turned over to a cleanup contractor and the building manager, fire officials said.

The full impact of the spill on the Saw Mill River and surrounding environment remains unclear, but emergency responders took immediate action to limit further contamination.
