Cody Allen Balmer, 38, of Harrisburg, remains under Pennsylvania State Police supervision while receiving treatment at an area hospital. Officials said the medical episode was unrelated to the fire or his arrest. Balmer will be arraigned at Dauphin County Prison once he is cleared for release, state police said.

A surveillance video captured Balmer climbing over a wall onto the Governor’s Residence grounds early Sunday, April 13, investigators explained. He was seen breaking a window with a hammer, tossing a Molotov cocktail into the home, and then forcing his way inside to ignite two more fires with additional incendiary devices, according to the criminal complaint.

Gov. Shapiro, his wife Lori, and their children were inside the mansion at the time and had to be evacuated by state troopers. No injuries were reported, but the fire caused significant damage to the historic home along North Front Street in Harrisburg.

Hours after the attack, troopers interviewed Balmer, who admitted to carrying out the arson, authorities said. A search of his Penbrook Borough residence uncovered a unique Snap-On jacket matching the one seen on surveillance footage, along with a bag containing a gasoline can.

Shocking photos released after the attack reveal the extensive fire and smoke damage inside the Governor’s Residence — you can view those images here.

Balmer is facing charges including Attempted Murder, Aggravated Arson, Burglary, Terrorism, and related offenses, according to Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo. He remains presumed innocent of the charges at this time.
